Travis Jankowski, OF, Stony Brook

Class: Junior
Hometown: Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Height/Weight: 6-3/190
Born: June 15, 1991

There’s no denying that the college class is short on hitters in 2012. That very fact should benefit Stony Brook speedster Travis Jankowski, who has been on a tear as of late.

Jankowski earned National Hitter of the Week honors following an explosive week in which he led a Stony Brook offensive onslaught that resulted in a five-game winning streak. The Seawolves scored at least ten runs in four of those five contests. For the year, Jankowski is hitting .321 with 21 runs scored, seven doubles, seven RBI and 13 steals.

With only three career home runs, it’s obvious Jankowski isn’t much of a power threat. Instead, he profiles as a prototypical leadoff hitter. He has excellent speed, and is already the SBU career leader in steals. He stole 30 last season and 13 as a freshman.

The introduction of new bats to the college game didn’t faze him one bit last year, as he produced a career-high .355 average. He followed that up with an impressive campaign in the prestigious Cape Cod League, where he hit .329, drove in 22 runs, swiped 15 bases and took home League MVP honors.

As impressive as Jankowski is at the plate, he might be even more impressive in the field. Last year he didn’t make a single error in 115 chances manning centerfield. This season, he’s committed only one.

With above-average speed and a quick bat, Jankowski should come off the board relatively early on day-one of the draft, and there’s a good chance he could sneak into the first-round.
