In case you missed it, another potential first-rounder has succumbed to a season-ending injury. Solon High left-hander Matt Smoral suffered a stress fracture in his foot, mere days after making his first start of the 2012 high-school season.
Smoral was widely viewed as a top prospect, with some considering him as a top-15 pick. He has a mid-90s fastball and two secondary pitches (slider, changeup) with decent potential. Toss in the bonus that he’s a southpaw, and there’s no wonder scouts were looking forward to seeing him in action this spring.
Smoral also has a commitment to UNC in his back pocket, so don’t think he’s going to sign very easily, regardless of where he ends up getting drafted.
Smoral checked in at No. 6 in ESPN.com’s top-100 high-school prospect rankings, and was the No. 2 lefty.
