Weickel has ranked among the top high school arms for quite some time now, and thanks to a strong senior season, he could wind up as a top-ten pick. There’s no way he makes it past the top 20.
A lot of it has to do with his sturdy frame (6’6″, 205 lbs) and the rest has to do with his low-to-mid 90s fastball, arguably one of the best in the high school crop. Weickel has been the darling of many a showcase event and has great name recognition among scouting directors heading into the draft. He’s probably one of the most underrated players to the general public, however, thanks to big performances by Lucas Giolito and a few other guys who have gotten more attention from Baseball America and ESPN.
Weickel also throws a solid curveball and his control of the pitch is unmatched among his peers. He has excellent fielding skills and has amazing speed for a big guy.
Along with teammates Jesse Winkler and Michael Hennessey, Weickel has pitched Olympia HS to the number one ranking in the nation. Along the way, he went a perfect 10-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 55 innings. He showed his prowess at the plate as well, hitting .323 with six homers and 23 RBI.
Weickel is committed to the University of Miami.
