Martin Agosta, RHP, St. Mary’s

Class: Junior
Hometown: Sacramento, California
Height/Weight: 6-1/178
Born:

Agosta burst onto the scene in 2011, becoming the first pitcher from St. Mary’s College since 1987 to finish the season with an ERA under 3.00 in 80 or more innings of work. He further boosted his helium with a strong showing in the Cal Ripken League last summer, going 4-0 with a 0.99 ERA in 27 innings. The CRL was responsible for churning out Glynn Davis, an undrafted free-agent who was signed by the Orioles and has gone on to become one of the most intriguing prospects.

All of that set the stage for 2012, where Agosta has won eight of his 12 starts, while racking up 74 strikeouts in 87.1 innings. His 2.37 ERA represents a career-high, and he still has a few starts left to further etch his name in the St. Mary’s record book.

Due to his smallish frame, Agosta went undrafted out of high school, despite a sterling career at Jesuit High in Carmichael, CA. Thanks to pretty good velocity, and a solid breaking ball, the diminutive right-hander has a shot at making a career as a reliever in the big-leagues.

    • I’d be surprised if Agosta were actually 6’1″. He seems closer to 5’11″ to me. But with that said, I agree that his ability to throw mid-90s is more important than his relatively slight stature.
