Jose Orlando Berrios, RHP, Papa Juan XXIII HS (PR)

Class: HS Senior
Hometown: Bayamon, Puerto Rico
Height/Weight: 6-1/210
Born: May 27, 1994

All the attention at the Excellent Tournament seemed to be on Puerto Rican slugging shortstop Carlos Correa, but another player stood out in an impressive way. Jose Orlando Berrios, better known to draftnicks as J.O., flashed impressive velocity and showed a more physical, durable frame that should make him more conducive to starting long-term.

His fastball velocity has always been an advantage, but this spring Berrios has jumped a good three-to-four miles per hour. He’s now been clocked as high as 96 mph and the pitch has shown excellent sink. His slider has also graded out as a plus pitch, and combined with his changeup, he has three pitches that show above-average promise.

With a little luck, Berrios could make a run at being the highest Puerto Rican drafted.

Fastball: 92-96 mph
Slider: 78-82 mph
Changeup: 80-84 mph
