The 2012 season began with such promise for Stanford right-hander Mark Appel. Not only was he the ace of the very talented Cardinal squad, but he was also the presumptive number one overall pick.

Flash forward six months and Appel was suffering an embarassing defeat at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles in the Super Regionals and experiencing a mult-million dollar slide in the draft.

Flash forward another six months and Appel is once again one of the likeliest candidates to go number one in the draft. After spurning the Pirates offer, he also returns to attempt to lead Stanford back to the CWS.

Appel has everything teams look for in an ace pitcher. He has the size, the stuff, and two years worth of positive results, save for that disastrous start against FSU. Scouts will no doubt be keeping an extra eye on him to see how he responds to all the disappointment he faced in 2012, and if he can put together another strong season, there’s no doubt he’ll end up going somewhere in the top five picks this June.

The real question, is whether or not Appel will bite the bullet and take what’s offered to him instead of longing for what could have been.
