First-Round Draft Tendencies by Franchise (Part II)

The following is part II of a breakdown of the draft tendencies of teams picking in the first-round, dating back to 1965. Compensation round selections are also included.

Draft tendencies in this article are broken down by:

  • Positional breakdown

A few interesting tidbits to be gleaned from this breakdown:

  • While no team has spent more draft picks on catchers than Houston (nine), the Mariners have actually used the highest percentage of their first round/compensation picks on the position, with 7-of-44 (16%).
  • The Cardinals have not only spent the most picks on corner infielders (1B/3B), they’ve also used the highest percentage, 15-of-76 (20%).
  • The Twins have used the most picks (13) on middle infielders (2B/SS), but the Brewers have used the highest percentage of picks, with 12-of-56 (21%).
  • The Red Sox have used the most picks (19) on outfielders, but the Rays have used the highest percentage of picks, with 9-of-30 (30%).
  • The Cardinals have used the most picks on right-handed pitchers (32), but the Tigers have used the highest percentage of picks, with 24-of-56 (43%).
  • The Royals have used the most picks on left-handed pitchers (13), but the Rockies have used the highest percentage of picks, with 7-of-32 (22%).
